Texas Man Sentenced After Fleeing Border Checkpoint With Person Hidden in Trunk

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has announced the sentencing of 26-year-old Kevin Dominguez, a Texas resident, following a dramatic incident at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. Highway 57.

Dominguez drove a sedan to the immigration checkpoint, where a trained Border Patrol canine detected something suspicious in the vehicle’s trunk. Upon further inspection, agents discovered a person concealed inside.

Rather than comply with authorities, Dominguez reversed the vehicle, striking a Border Patrol agent before speeding away from the scene. This triggered a high-speed pursuit involving ground units and a helicopter.

The chase ended when Dominguez and his passenger, later identified as an undocumented Honduran national, abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot through an open field. Both were apprehended shortly afterward.

Dominguez was charged with one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in federal court in Del Rio, Texas, to 18 months in prison.

This case comes amid heightened border enforcement efforts across Texas. Federal authorities have ramped up operations targeting human smuggling, serious criminal activity, and individuals with prior offenses. Dozens of suspects have been arrested in connection with organized smuggling rings.

The increased enforcement reflects a broader government strategy aimed at deterring illegal border crossings and dismantling criminal networks that exploit the immigration system.

However, the approach has drawn criticism from human rights advocates, who argue that the government—under the Trump administration—may be overreaching and potentially violating due process in its aggressive tactics. While supporters see the crackdown as essential for national security, critics continue to raise concerns about accountability and the treatment of migrants.
