An individual who states to have traveled all corners of the world has unveiled the city he considers the most undesirable globally.
According to Drew Binsky, his extensive travel experience makes him more than capable of ranking the superior and inferior nations following his exploration of all 197 of them.
Commencing his quest to undertake the ultimate journey across the planet after quitting his teaching profession in 2015 and committing to continuously hopping from one destination to another.
Being gifted a good camera by his former partner paved the way for Drew to create a highly popular YouTube channel to document his adventures.
Throughout his journeys, he has come face-to-face with cannibals on Papua Island, navigated the ‘most narrow city in the world’ in China, and managed to get a beer and full meal for just £3 in Uzbekistan, among other daring escapades.
However, none of these places left as much of an impact on him as his trip to Conakry, the largest city and capital of Guinea.
Although Drew is accustomed to rough and tough environments – having visited notoriously crime-infested locations such as Johannesburg and Honiara – he considers this place to be ‘undoubtedly one of the worst’ he has ever been to.
In December, the US government issued fresh travel alerts to Americans traveling to Guinea cautioning them to ‘exercise increased caution due to crime, civil unrest, and inadequate health infrastructure.’
Travelers were warned about the high risk of crimes like pickpocketing, purse snatching, theft from vehicles, assaults, and residential burglaries, particularly in congested areas.
It was also mentioned that ‘there are increased safety hazards and security concerns at night’ and the US assessed the country’s health system to be substandard.
While this information may not paint a favorable picture of a trip to Conakry for you, if you are still uncertain about making a booking, then wait until you hear Drew’s account of it.
In a video titled ‘ranking the top 20 best and worst cities on earth’, the content creator – who has nearly five million subscribers – narrated how his initial ten minutes in the port city were already chaotic.
“Two police officers have already stopped us,” he mentioned to the camera, while his companion added, “The whole city is chaotic!”
The explorer from Texas continued, “Upon my arrival, there was a coup…policemen were stationed on the streets equipped with large shields and bulletproof vests, it felt like war was imminent.”
“We boarded the car and drove away, proceeded to the next checkpoint,” he added.
Drew then recounted an official revealing their whereabouts without giving much context, and then mentioned, “Now our driver, poor Marlin, had to handle all this situation. He’s negotiating with them.”
The YouTuber shared that their driver had to pay a $20 (£16.25) ‘bribe’ to continue their journey in the vehicle.
“This place is definitely one of my least preferred in the world,” Drew continued, before outlining the other challenges he faced during his stay in Conakry.
“The entire city had an odor of garbage. It was like sewage was everywhere, and though I can tolerate unclean places to a certain extent and have witnessed many things around the globe…Conakry was notably the worst.
“The people there weren’t very welcoming at all. In fact, I attempted to sit down at a restaurant and was asked to leave by a guy for reasons unknown to me.”
Out of all the 197 countries he has visited, Drew remarked that Conakry felt ‘one of the most unsafe’.
However, it wasn’t entirely negative – as he did have a ‘pleasant’ visit to a popular mosque in the vicinity.
“Apart from that, I found the capital of Guinea to be dull,” Drew added. “And it’s probably a destination I won’t return to.”
The YouTuber mentioned that the cities of N’Djamena in Chad and Delhi, India, also rank low on his list.
On the contrary, he highlighted that the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, the popular tourist destination Bangkok in Thailand, and Seoul in South Korea secured spots in his top three.
