Mary Lou Retton’s Health Journey: A Brave Fight for Survival

Mary Lou Retton gained fame as a gymnast for Team USA at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Her stunning performances on the vault and floor exercise earned her two gold medals and cemented her legacy in American sports history. She was later honored as Sports Illustrated’s Female Athlete of the Year and appeared on Wheaties boxes.

Recently, McKenna Kelly, daughter of the gymnastics icon, shared a distressing update on her Instagram Story. Retton is currently fighting for her life in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Kelly revealed that her mother is battling a rare form of pneumonia that affects her ability to breathe independently. She has been receiving continuous medical care for over a week.

Out of respect for Retton’s privacy, Kelly did not provide additional details but mentioned that her mother does not have insurance, resulting in rapidly mounting hospital bills.

To help cover these expenses, Kelly has set up a fund and is requesting support from those who can contribute. She is asking for both prayers and financial donations to assist with the hospital costs.

Though Retton retired from gymnastics in 1986, she has remained a well-known figure, making guest appearances on shows like Glee and Baywatch, and competing on season 27 of Dancing with the Stars.

It is uncertain how long Retton will remain hospitalized. The celebrated athlete, who has inspired many, was also inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.
