At the beginning of last month, the British royal family witnessed a significant event.
Prince Harry returned to London to mark the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games. During his visit, his brother, Prince William, received a notable new honor from King Charles, which many perceived as a slight against Harry.
The Palace announced that King Charles III appointed Prince William as the colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps. “His Majesty the King will officially hand over the role of Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps to His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales,” the statement read. “In August 2023, following His Majesty’s Accession, the King was pleased to announce military appointments, including that the Prince of Wales would become Colonel-in-Chief of the Army Air Corps. The role was previously held by His Majesty the King, as Prince of Wales, for 31 years.”
Royal expert Tom Quinn claims Prince Harry was “in tears when he heard,” adding, “What makes it much worse is that the role is being given to the very man who Harry sees as the cause of so many of his problems – his brother.
“And the announcement was deliberately made during Harry’s brief visit to the UK to have maximum impact; it shows Harry that he really is no longer welcome.”
William’s new role places him in charge of Harry’s former unit. In 2008, Harry completed his Army Air Corps “Grading” and Pilot’s Selection Board interview, subsequently training as an Army Air Corps pilot in 2009.
“On successful completion of that Army Pilots Course, Prince Harry was selected to train on the Apache Attack Helicopter,” Harry’s official biography read before it was removed from the royal family website. “On the same day, it was announced that Prince Harry received his provisional wings from his father.” Charles was colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps at the time, making the ceremony especially meaningful for Harry.
The announcement of Prince William’s new position comes amid heightened public interest, fueled by the tense relationship between Prince Harry and his father. Speculation about their interactions, or lack thereof, during Harry’s recent visit to the U.K. highlights the complexities of royal family dynamics.
During Harry’s visit, he did not meet with King Charles due to the king’s “full programme.” However, Harry stated that he “hopes to see him soon.”
Despite strained relations with the royal family, Harry expressed his joy about returning to the UK. He described the event as “amazing” and praised the work of Scotty’s, emphasizing the essential support they provide to children.
“The more opportunity you get to do these kinds of events, the more the families and kids know this place exists, which is really the most important thing,” Harry said, as reported by BBC.
