Rock Legend and Former ‘Canadian Idol’ Judge Sass Jordan Dies at 63

The music world is mourning the loss of Sass Jordan, the acclaimed British-Canadian rock singer and television personality who has died at the age of 63.

Jordan passed away on October 2, 2026, surrounded by her loving family, according to a statement shared by her relatives on social media. Her family remembered her as an extraordinary person whose energy, light, and joy would never be forgotten.

Born in Birmingham, England, on December 23, 1962, Jordan moved to Montreal, Canada, during her childhood. Her passion for music developed at an early age, and she began performing as a teenager. By the time she was 20, she was already working with some of Montreal’s established musicians while developing her own songwriting career.

Her breakthrough arrived in 1988 after signing with Atlantic Records and releasing her debut album, Tell Somebody. The record introduced her powerful rock vocals to a wider audience and featured songs that became popular in Canada.

In 1989, she received the Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist, marking an important milestone in her growing career. Her 1992 album Racine further strengthened her reputation, producing several successful singles.

Jordan eventually expanded her career into the American music industry, signing with RCA Records after moving to Los Angeles. Her music also reached a wider audience through its inclusion in the hugely successful The Bodyguard soundtrack.

One of her biggest career achievements came in 1994 when her song Sun’s Gonna Rise reached No. 7 on the Canadian charts and entered the US Billboard Hot 100.

Beyond her recording career, Jordan became a familiar television personality through her role as a judge on Canadian Idol, appearing throughout all six seasons of the show. She also demonstrated her acting abilities by portraying legendary singer Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway musical Love, Janis in 2001.

Despite her success in mainstream rock, Jordan eventually returned to her blues and rock roots. Her 2020 album Rebel Moon Blues reached the top five of the US blues chart, followed by Bitches Blues in 2022.

In the weeks leading up to her death, Jordan had reportedly cancelled several scheduled performances because of a serious medical condition. The specific cause of her death has not been publicly disclosed.

Her passing marks the loss of a distinctive voice in Canadian rock music. Through her recordings, television appearances, and unforgettable performances, Sass Jordan leaves behind a musical legacy that will continue to be remembered by fans.

Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone who loved her music.
