Tom Hanks has stirred up supporters of Donald Trump after his MAGA-clad ‘Doug’ character appeared on the special 50th anniversary edition of Saturday Night Live.
Celebrities from various places gathered in New York on February 16 to honor SNL’s significant birthday milestone.
A multitude of A-listers including Meryl Streep, Martin Short, Jack Nicholson, and Aubrey Plaza joined in to commemorate the half-century mark of the sketch comedy show.
During the celebration, Hanks, the renowned actor, participated in a sketch that sparked some controversy among President Trump’s backers.
In a parody game show called Black Jeopardy, the Forrest Gump star wore a red ‘Make America Great Again’ cap while portraying a character named Doug.
In the skit, the host of the parody show, Kenan Thompson, attempted to shake hands with Doug, who initially hesitated.
After some hesitation, Doug finally shook hands and quipped, “Not a fan of that, whoa, whoa, whoa. Perhaps I should create a show for you to appear on, and we shall name it White Jeopardy.”
One social media post remarked: “Tom Hanks appeared on SNL in a disheveled appearance, ridiculing millions of Trump supporters – depicting them as unintelligent, prejudiced, country bumpkins.
“Continue with this, leftists. You will not succeed in another election.”
Link Lauren, a former counsel to Robert F. Kennedy Jr, expressed: “On SNL, Tom Hanks just appeared in a MAGA hat and acted as though he was reluctant to shake a black man’s hand.
“This program puzzles over its plummeting ratings. Trump secured the majority vote. The stale idea that MAGA is bigoted is abhorrent. SNL is an unfunny show for elitist liberals. The current GOP is a broad coalition made up of many ex-Democrats. Goodbye, SNL!”
Another Trump supporter commented: “During Tom Hanks’ appearance on SNL as a racist Trump follower who declines to shake hands with a black man, no one in the audience found it amusing,” while another said: “This infuriates me. SNL aired a sketch tonight with Tom Hanks as a MAGA racist… he recoils visibly when a black game show host offers a handshake.”
