Trump Responds to Celebrity Boycott During Surprise ‘Les Misérables’ Appearance with Melania

Former President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise appearance at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday night to attend a performance of Les Misérables, staged by understudies. Joining them were Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha.

As the Trumps walked the red carpet, a reporter asked the former president how he felt about actors planning to boycott the event due to his presence. Trump dismissed the controversy, saying, “I couldn’t care less. All I do is run the country well.”

The visit marked Trump’s first return to the Kennedy Center since he appointed himself chairman of the board in February, following a sweeping dismissal of former board members. He also appointed Richard Grenell as executive director.

At the time of the leadership overhaul, Trump criticized the center’s previous management for allowing what he called “inappropriate drag shows targeting our youth.” He described the center as being in “tremendous disrepair” and promised to restore it, stating, “We want to bring it back better than ever. It needs a little help, but it’s going to be fantastic.”

The shake-up triggered backlash. Notable figures such as Shonda Rhimes and Ben Folds severed their ties with the Kennedy Center. LGBTQ+ programming, including Pride Month events, was canceled or moved elsewhere, sparking protests.

During Wednesday’s performance, drag queens appeared in protest, making a dramatic statement against the changes. Videos circulating online showed audience members offering scattered applause and cheers in support of the demonstration.

In a red carpet interview, Trump praised Grenell’s leadership and reflected on his first theater experience, guessing it was Cats. He also mentioned having seen Les Misérables multiple times.

When asked whether he saw himself more as Javert or Jean Valjean—the musical’s opposing characters—Trump chuckled and said, “That’s tough. You better answer that one, honey.” Melania declined to respond.
