Hollywood is remembering beloved actress Susan Saint James, best known for her memorable roles in the television series Kate & Allie and McMillan & Wife. She passed away on October 26, 2026, at the age of 80.
Born Susan Jane Miller in Los Angeles in 1946, she grew up in Rockford, Illinois. She began her career as a model before moving into acting in Hollywood at the age of 20.

Her breakthrough came with the television series The Name of the Game, earning her an Emmy Award in 1969. She later became widely recognized for playing Sally McMillan opposite Rock Hudson in McMillan & Wife.
However, it was her portrayal of Kate McArdle in the popular comedy series Kate & Allie that made her a household name. The show, which followed two divorced mothers raising their children together, ran for five successful seasons between 1984 and 1989.
Beyond her successful acting career, Susan was devoted to her family and charitable work. After gradually stepping away from television and films, she dedicated more time to raising her children and supporting the Special Olympics, an organization she had been involved with since the late 1960s.
Her personal life was also marked by profound heartbreak. In November 2004, her family experienced a devastating plane crash in Colorado. Her youngest son, 14-year-old Edward, affectionately known as Teddy, lost his life in the accident. Her husband, television producer Dick Ebersol, and their son Charles survived but suffered serious injuries.
Despite her unimaginable grief, Susan showed extraordinary compassion and strength. She comforted her family and personally responded to thousands of condolence letters, writing approximately 15,000 handwritten notes to people who had reached out.
Susan and Dick Ebersol shared three sons together: Charles, William, and Edward. She also had two children, Sunshine and Harmony, from her previous marriage.
In August 2026, Susan celebrated her 80th birthday surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and close friends. Her family later recalled how much she cherished the celebration.
She is survived by her husband, Dick Ebersol, four children, seven grandchildren, and her sister, Mary Mercedes Dewey.
Remembered for her warmth, generosity, remarkable talent, and dedication to others, Susan Saint James leaves behind a lasting legacy both on and off the screen.
